These We Call His Attributes (#0)

If someone should ask “What is the most important thing about you?” what would you say? Not a run of the mill question to answer and one that reveals something of our source of identity. For example, would you say that you are a husband to a wife, a servant of Christ, an atheist, a self made millionaire or the mother of the two most beautiful children? Are these the most important things about us?

“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”

This is the first sentence in The Attributes of God by A.W. Tozer. He might be unto something and so, over the next couple of weeks, I will try and run through Tozer’s book with brief summaries of his understanding of the attributes of God.

‘What is God like?’ If by that question we mean ‘What is God like in Himself?’ there is no answer. If we mean ‘What has God disclosed about Himself that the reverent reason can comprehend?’ there is, I believe, an answer both full and satisfying. For while the name of God is secret and His essential nature incomprehensible, He in condescending love has by revelation declared certain things to be true of Himself. These we call His attributes.

God Is ____

Over the years some great books were written that can help us understand God better –  Knowledge of The Holy by AW Tozer comes to mind. The attributes of God are what God has revealed, in the Bible, about Himself, for our benefit. Here is a poster that might help you to better understand the character of God by briefly describing each of His revealed attributes.
