Taking Away The Distance

“By Jesus Christ alone, then, on all considerations as to being and full manifestation, is this distance taken away.”

-John Owen, Of Communion with God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, 1657 (emphasis added)

Here follows John Owen’s reasoning concerning the diminished distance between us and God:

  1. Abraham was a friend of God. David was a man after His own heart. Enoch walked with God. These men enjoyed communion with God, but they did not have a boldness and confidence in that communion. Why? Because the saints of old did not have access into the most holy (Heb 9:8).
  2. Our High Priest enters the most holy place.
  3. Now we have access to God (Eph 3:12) – with boldness and confidence, we can draw near to God.

for through him we both have our access in one Spirit unto the Father.”     – Eph 2:18

Having fellowship with an Infinite, Almighty God is an astonishing privilege we tainted, deprived sinners are given. Now consider the effect this realisation has on us, on our prayer life , on our grateful disposition and our eagerness to share this precious Gospel.
